History
Construction of the stadium began in the early 1990s on what was previously swampland, taking around three years and roughly ₹25 crore to complete. It opened in 1993 and hosted its first international match, an ODI between India and South Africa, in the same year. Its first Test followed in December 1994 against West Indies.
The stadium was renamed in 2015 in honour of Inderjit Singh Bindra, a former president of both the Punjab Cricket Association and the BCCI, who played a key role in developing the venue. One of its distinctive features is a low-height floodlight design, adopted specifically to avoid interfering with air traffic from the nearby Chandigarh airport.
