History
Before this stadium existed, the JSCA organised international matches at Keenan Stadium in Jamshedpur, a venue owned by Tata Steel. A dispute over match allocations — which saw an India–England fixture relocated to Bengaluru after JSCA reportedly received no response from Tata Steel — prompted the association to build its own dedicated venue in the state capital, Ranchi.
Constructed within the premises of the Heavy Engineering Corporation (HEC), a public-sector company, the stadium was designed so that no shadow falls across any of its nine main pitches before 4:45 pm, even on the year’s shortest day. It opened in January 2013 with an ODI between India and England, won by India by seven wickets under Dhoni’s captaincy. The venue hosted its first T20I in 2016 against Sri Lanka, and its first Test in March 2017 against Australia, which ended in a draw.
